How to Feel Like Eating Breakfast First Thing in the Morning

7. Pancakes and Sausage

The emerging waffle house or pancake house trend across the U.S. is filling us full of empty carbs, sugar, and fat, particularly when you consider what’s in those processed breakfast sausages. Prepared griddle style and swimming in corn syrup (not real maple syrup), the average pancake and sausage breakfast weighs in at 800 empty calories. Choosing a natural maple syrup is better, but it still doesn’t make up for the fact that a pancake is made from refined flour. Artificial syrup is made with high-fructose corn syrup which is also a main ingredient in most processed and packaged foods. “High fructose corn syrup can lead to more abdominal obesity and visceral fat-which is stored between the organs,” says registered dietitian Jean LaMantia to Best Health.

Luckily, homemade pancakes can be quick to make and lighter on the waistline. Mix up a pancake batter made with whole grain, multigrain, or quinoa flour, baking soda, baking powder, vanilla soy milk or almond milk, chopped nuts, applesauce, and an egg. Add some natural sweetness by adding sliced banana, golden raisins, maple syrup, and honey.

Everyone knows that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, but it's also the easiest to skip. However, having a good breakfast is shown to make you more alert throughout the day and may keep you from snacking your way to lunch. Try changing up your routine or making your breakfast options a little more palatable, and you can become a breakfast person in no time.

Method1
Changing Your Routine

1
Avoid eating anything in the 2 to 3 hours before you go to sleep. It'll be harder for you to feel hungry first thing in the morning if you're not finishing your dinner until just before you go to sleep. Aim to have your dinner finished 2 or 3 hours before bedtime, and avoid snacking after dinner to help build your appetite for breakfast.[1]

Question
Are cookies and tea a good breakfast?

Question
Are waffles and fake bacon a good breakfast option?
Community Answer
Fake bacon is not good for you. If you're going to eat bacon, eat real bacon instead -- you can buy a turkey variety that has much lower fat if you prefer. Waffles are a good choice, especially whole grain waffles. Add a healthy fat to your waffles and some fruit on top, and all together you'll have a nice, balanced breakfast.

Making someone breakfast in bed is a nice gesture. While the standard breakfast-in-bed fare is pretty straightforward–you make breakfast and put it on a tray or table so that the person can put it on their lap–it's more fun to go to additional effort when preparing it. Here are some tips for making breakfast in bed extra special.

Steps

[Image titled Make Breakfast in Bed Step 1]
1
Get a tray that has small sides on it. This will contain the food securely, and keep any spillage from falling onto the bed. There are specially made small tables intended for this very purpose. If you can't find one, use a laptop desk.
[Image titled Make Breakfast in Bed Step 2]

3
Prepare the breakfast as quietly as possible, if there's a chance you might wake the person up. If you can chop or mix any ingredients the night before, do so. If you're making coffee, put a towel along the crack at the bottom of the bedroom door so that they don't smell it. (This is assuming that you want the breakfast in bed to be a surprise.)

Be sure to clean up after yourself, too. If the person you're treating comes into the kitchen to find a pigsty, that might kill their delight over what you just did for them.
See also the articles on How to Make a Good Pot of Coffee and Make Tea. Don't forget to supply cream and sugar, if the person being treated likes it in their hot drink.

4
Pour any liquids only 3/4 of the way. This is especially important with hot liquids, as you don't want them to spill onto the person or the bed linen when the tray is moved.

Try to avoid skipping breakfast at all, as it can be easier to form a habit if you can justify it once.
Anything can be breakfast!
Stay at a Bed & Breakfast renowned for its great breakfast spreads. Not only will this whet your appetite but it'll inspire you. Throw in a spa treatment and hopefully the new, relaxed you will go home

2
Decide what you'll make for breakfast. Here are some ideas:

Make a Tropical Breakfast. This is both healthy and refreshing.
Make One Egg Waffles. These are a little healthier than most waffles, but if you really want to spoil someone, make French toast waffles.
Serve a Bagel Breakfast. Be sure to include a variety of delicious condiments as well as a choice of bagels.
Make a Traditional Full English Breakfast. An English muffin with some eggs, and orange juice, coffee, or tea on the side is good.

brimful of desire to make a decent breakfast!
If you're a smoker or heavy coffee drinker, take a shower first. Waking up to something other than chemicals which actually impair an appetite will help you gain control - adding some grain and fruit to your caffeine and nicotine breakfast.
If your stomach is sensitive to the acid from orange juice, try adding water or even apple juice to dilute it.

Warnings

4. Donuts

If you feel yourself getting hungry before bedtime, try drinking a glass of water first, or only snacking on something small. Opt for a few apple slices, some cheese cubes, or a banana rather than something more substantial.
Some studies have found that eating less at nighttime and more during the day can help with weight loss and general health.

[Image titled Feel Like Eating Breakfast First Thing in the Morning Step 2]
2
Get 7 to 9 hours of sleep each night. If you wake up in the middle of a sleep cycle or have to drag yourself out of bed in the morning, you might not have the time or the desire to eat a good breakfast. Make sure that you are getting at least 7 hours of sleep each night, and that you leave yourself time to eat breakfast the next morning.[2]

Try going to bed a little earlier than you usually would, so that you can wake up a little earlier as well.

[Image titled Avoid Sleeping and Yawning During the Day Step 6]

4
Exercise for 30 minutes to 1 hour before breakfast. If you're not feeling hungry when you first wake up, doing a little exercise is a great way to build up your appetite. Try going for a run, or even just doing some push-ups or sit-ups first thing in the morning before you sit down for breakfast.[4]

It may help to drink a glass of juice or have something small like a banana before your morning workout. See what feels best for you and go with that.

Method2
Choosing a Good Breakfast

[Image titled Feel Like Eating Breakfast First Thing in the Morning Step 5]
1
Mix up your breakfast options. If you're eating the same thing for breakfast every day, it can be easy to get bored with your options and choose to skip it altogether. Try planning ahead when shopping so you can vary your breakfast options based on what you're in the mood for. Here are a few simple suggestions:

Try and get multiple types of cereal, or different toppings for your cereal or muesli for some easy variation.
Stock up on eggs and choose one of the many ways to prepare them.
Get something more interesting than white bread to replace your morning carbohydrates. Try scones, crumpets, bagels, French toast waffles or homemade biscuits.
Purchase some frozen breakfast foods, such as some pastries or breakfast pizzas, for something special you can cook up quickly.

[Image titled Feel Like Eating Breakfast First Thing in the Morning Step 6]
2
Try a liquid breakfast at first. Eating a big meal first thing in the morning might take some time to adjust to, either in terms of appetite or time. Instead, try making a fruit smoothie, or even drinking a glass of juice first thing in the morning. This will help get you in the habit of eating early, and may even kickstart your appetite and make you want to eat something else.[5]

Use whatever fruits and liquids you want when making your smoothie. Part of the fun is customizing it to whatever you're in the mood for!
Keep some frozen fruit or berries in the fridge that you can throw into a smoothie without having to cut up or prepare. This will speed up the smoothie-making process, and the cold may help wake you up!

It doesn’t matter if the donut is jam-filled, sugar-coated, or honey-glazed, they are full of fat and sugar, and will hardly satisfy anything other than a sweet tooth. An average old cake donut contains about 6-grams of fat and 250-calories. While the average apple fritter or cream-filled goodie contains at least 9-grams of fat and over 300-calories—and one is hardly enough to get your through until lunch. “Not only are these pasteries made with refined white flour, but there’s sugar added,” says LaMantia to Best Health. Sugar is the worst thing to consume in the morning as fuel for the rest of the day.

Luckily, you can still satisfy a sweet tooth with a toasted bagel, pita, or English muffin depending how you spread it. When I’m craving something sweet and creamy, I opt for raw almond butter and sliced banana as my topper. I’ve also used sliced and baked apples with a sprinkle of cinnamon and a touch of maple syrup. Organic apple butter is also naturally sweet with no additives or refined sweeteners.

3
Wake up earlier so you have plenty of time for breakfast. If you have to rush out the door in the morning to avoid being late, it's easy to make it an excuse for skipping breakfast. If you want to start eating breakfast first thing, set your alarm around 20 minutes earlier than you usually would to make sure you'll have plenty of time to eat.[3]

Put your alarm out of arm's reach, so you have to wake up and get out of bed to turn it off or hit the snooze button.

5. Breakfast Scones

Breakfast scones are all goodness and love—particularly if grandma makes them, right? Wrong! These sugar- and butter-filled breakfast land mines might be harmless looking, but they are all fat, empty calories, and sugar with absolutely no fiber or quality protein. No, not even if you eat yours with clotted cream.

Luckily, you don’t have to totally forgo your breakfast baked good. You can make your own scones at home using quick-cooking oatmeal or quinoa flour, both whole grain options. Or if you prefer store bought, opt for whole grain English muffins or crumpets and smear a little fresh fruit preserve (made with no artificial sweeteners) or raw almond butter onto your morning toasty.

6. Store-Bought Granola

Sure, it looks like a health mixture of honey, brown sugar, oats, and dried fruit, but think again. Most store-bought boxes of granola contain up to 10 grams of fat and 400 calories per serving, which outweighs a glazed donut. Many boxed granolas contain a whole whack of hidden sugar, unless you’re reading labels and consciously buying an organic or natural variety made with simple sugars, or making your own at home. Otherwise, you’re basically eating dessert for breakfast!

The good news is that DIY granola is typically a lot healthier and a lot cheaper on the wallet. Mix your own by combining whole grain oats, raw nuts, organic dried fruit and seeds, dried spices (i.e., cinnamon and nutmeg), and a touch of natural sweetness (i.e., real maple syrup or raw honey). I like to make my own for the week and then bring a large container to work so breakfast is waiting for me at my desk when I arrive each morning.

If you’re getting your bagel and cream cheese on the go, you’re probably not getting a calorie-conscious, whole grain bagel with reduced fat cream cheese. Whole grain is made up of all the essential parts of the entire and original buckwheat, spelt, kamut, bulger, barley, millet, corn, oat, amaranth, grain, or rye gain. This means it hasn’t been cracked, crushed, rolled, or extruded.

However, if like many, you crave a toasted bagel in the morning, you can easily cut the calories in half by toasting and smearing your own whole grain bagel at home.  Or better yet, skip the high caloric and fatty cream cheese and use low fat cottage cheese or natural nut butter instead. Raw nut butters like almond, peanut, macadamia, and soy butter are all tasty and melt nicely onto a bagel.

2. Supermarket Boxed Cereals

Fruit Loops, Cocoa Puffs, Honey Nut Cheerios, these store-bought cereals are meant to appeal to the sweet teeth of big and little kids as they wander the grocery aisles. Most of these processed cereals are jam-packed with sugar and will only lead to an energy crash sometime after 10:30am. Plus, the recommended serving size of ¼ cup will never satiate your appetite. You’re bound to consume double or triple the amount of empty calories and sugar in your bowl. “Some cereals are full of carbohydrates and sugar,” says Jean LaMantia, registered dietitian and author of the Essential Cancer Treatment and Nutrition Guide Cookbook to Best Health.

A cereal is considered healthy when its made up of good nutrition–including a high source of fiber and protein, packed with essential vitamins and minerals, and low in refined sugars, sodium, and Trans fats. Look for a cereal that’s high in whole grains (i.e., oats, barley, spelt, kamut, and quinoa) as well as heart-healthy fats (i.e., raw nuts and seeds), and natural sugars (i.e., raw honey or real maple syrup) as a healthy way start to your day.

3. Breakfast Smoothie

Do you ever wonder why breakfast smoothies are so sweet? Well, because they are full of refined sugar—that’s why. Most store-bought varieties contain full fat milk, or worse, cream or (gasp) ice cream, so it’s really more of a dessert shake than a breakfast beverage. Instead of buying your smoothie at the local café, blend a healthy version up at home using Greek yogurt, unsweetened almond or skim milk, and fresh or frozen fruit.

I like to use my smoothie as a great and sneaky way to also add greens to my morning meal. I always throw a handful of mixed greens (i.e., like baby spinach or pea sprouts) into my blender along with my fruit and almond milk in order to ensure a added source of natural vitamins and nutrients. It’s like an added health boost in the morning.

Pick something you can prepare in advance. If you're not eating breakfast because you run out of time in the mornings, try planning ahead the night before so you have less to organize. Make some breakfast muffins or prepare some overnight oats to reduce the amount of work you have to do in the morning. [6]

There are plenty of different healthy breakfasts that you can prepare in advance. See what else you can find or come up with.

4
Keep some breakfast options that you can eat on the go. For mornings that you're in more of a rush than usual, it can help to keep some granola bars, bananas, or something similar that you can eat on your way out the door. This will stop from you skipping breakfast on even the most stressful mornings, and make it an easy habit to keep.[7]

Trail mix and fresh or dried fruit are also great options for a quick breakfast.

8. Take-Away Breakfast Sandwich

Sure, it has the makings of a balanced breakfast—with egg, meat, cheese, and toast—but when you really break down that breakfast sandwich or croissant, you’re getting a greasy fried egg, processed ham or bacon, full fat cheese, butter, and a biscuit with a bunch of super fast burning carbohydrates (which means that you’ll be hungry in a few hours) and no fiber whatsoever.

Instead of opting for the drive-thou quick breakfast sandwich, do your health a favour by making your own, healthier version at home. I start with a few slices of dark rye or oat bread, top with a poached egg or a sliced hardboiled egg, top with fresh avocado, tomato slices, and lean deli turkey, no need for butter!

Try your best. Look up recipes. There are plenty of easy breakfast recipes. You can also practice cooking ahead of time. Remember, it's the thought that counts, so you shouldn't cook something you don't know how to cook. If worse comes to worst, you can always make a bowl of cereal!

Bite Into These Interesting but Nutritious Foods

You’ve heard that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. And there’s a reason for following that wise piece of advice. Food research shows that starting your day with a healthy breakfast will aid weight loss goals by curbing mid-afternoon snack attacks and binge eating. However, that doesn’t mean you should fill your gullet with a mess of sugar-filled cereals or toaster treats first thing in the morning. The key to a healthy breakfast is a combination of complex carbohydrates, lean protein, low fat dairy, and fresh fruits.

In other words, the following 20 foods will only provide an overload of sugar, empty carbohydrates and calories, and a lack of essential vitamins that will leave you fatigued and craving sugar by mid-day. So steer clear of these breakfast foods to start your day…

1. Bagel with Cream Cheese

5
Have leftovers or other non-breakfast foods for breakfast. There's nothing to say you have to eat cereal, toast, or other breakfast foods for breakfast. If you're not in the mood for a bowl of oatmeal, dig into some leftovers from the previous night, or anything else that's in your fridge.[8]

As long as your breakfast has some protein and ideally some carbohydrates, it should set you up for the day or at least get you to lunchtime.

[Image titled Feel Like Eating Breakfast First Thing in the Morning Step 10]
6
Spread your breakfast over the morning. While starting the day with a big breakfast is great for manual laborers and farmers, but you might not use up all that energy as quickly if you're sitting in an office. Instead of one big breakfast, spread a few breakfast snacks over the course of your morning. This will prevent you from skipping breakfast without needing to have a big appetite as soon as you wake up.[9]

Try eating a small bowl of cereal when you first get up, a banana on the way to work, and a granola bar or some nuts after an hour or so. Mix it up and see what works best for you.

Tips

Breakfast is the first meal of a day.[1] The word in English refers to breaking the fasting period of the previous night.[2] There is a strong likelihood for one or more "typical", or "traditional", breakfast menus to exist in most places, but their composition varies widely from place to place, and has varied over time, so that globally a very wide range of preparations and ingredients are now associated with breakfast.

Tips

Choose a time when your special recipient won't be rushed to finish their breakfast. A weekend is often a good time, or a special holiday.
Set the food on a large, easy-to-carry tray so you don't have to make multiple trips while delivering the food.
Be extremely careful when bringing the tray. You could fall and spill food everywhere.
Cover the food while you wait for the person to get up.
Surprise them! You never know when they need it most!
If it is a special occasion like a birthday, it is always nice to make a banner to tie at the end of the bed.

Warnings

Avoid serving toast or anything that might create a mess of crumbs. Sleeping on sheets with crumbs on them can be unbearable. If you do serve something crumbly, try to make sure to get all of the crumbs off the bed after the person gets up, or change the sheets entirely.

9. Breakfast Burrito

Microwavable, munch-while-you-drive, appropriate breakfast burritos sure do seem convenient. However, most contain an entire day’s worth of saturated fat (look at all of that cheese, sour cream, and ground sausage or beef) regardless of the fact that you need more than one to satisfy your breakfast hunger. Did you really think there was any nutritional value to that massive tortilla stuffed with half a processed pig, full fat processed cheese, fatty egg substitute, and, yuck, hash browns?

However, making your own at home can save you money on drive through junk and junk in your trunk. Roll lean turkey slices, scrambled or sliced hardboiled egg, mashed avocado, homemade salsa, low fat cheese, and a dollop of plain Greek yogurt into a whole grain tortilla. Toast in your toaster oven for a few minutes until the contents melt, wrap in a napkin, and enjoy while you walk to work.

10. Café Jumbo Muffin

I say jumbo muffin because I’m referring to the fact that most store-bought muffins contain enough fat and calories to make up the size of 3 muffins. More cupcake than breakfast pastry, your average banana-walnut, carrot, or blueberry muffins is nothing more than a glorified snack cake, jam-packed with Trans fat oils, loads of refined sugars, sodium, and fruit filling that is more pie filling than real berries, bananas, or apples.

However, healthier muffins bake up in a jiffy. Make a batch and wrap them individually in cellophane to take to work all week long. Just make sure you’re using whole grain flours (i.e., oat, quinoa, spelt) as well as natural sugars (i.e., apple sauce, apple butter, honey, and real maple syrup), and heart healthy fats (i.e., mashed banana, avocado, and whole eggs) in your homemade muffin recipes.

Lay a single flower down on the tray, or sprinkle flower petals across the tray.
On the plates, around the food, add some edible flowers (perhaps some candied violets).
If using a cloth napkin, fold it into a pyramid shape.
You can also fold a paper napkin into a rose (not the one they will be using, just an extra one for decoration).
Make a card with a nice note written in it.

[Image titled Make Breakfast in Bed Step 6]
6
When you bring the breakfast, put it aside while you prepare the area. Use a stand such as a coffee table, or a folding table already assembled. Puff up the pillows, and add extras, so as to make sitting up more comfortable. Straighten the bed covering, so that you can place down the tray's legs (if any). If the tray is flat, add some books or something strong under the tray for support.
[Image titled Make Breakfast in Bed Step 7]
7
Turn on the television, play music, or give the person something to read while they eat. Or, of course, feel free to stick around and talk with them!
[Image titled Make Breakfast in Bed Step 8]
8
When they're done, clean up. Take the tray from them and clean the dishes. Another excellent touch is to run a luxury bath and while they're enjoying it, make the bed!
